What are Essential Skills?

 

 

Essential Skills:

 

  • are the fundamental skills needed for work, learning and life

 

  • provide the foundation for learning all other skills

 

  • enhance people's ability to adapt to workplace change

 

  • enable people to evolve with their jobs and succeed in the labour market

 

 

The Government of Canada and other national and international agencies have identified and validated nine Essential Skills:

 

 

  • Reading text

 

  • Document use

 

  • Writing

 

  • Numeracy

 

  • Oral communication

 

  • Thinking skills

 

  • Working with others

 

  • Computer use

 

  • Continuous learning

 

 

 

 

What is Opportunity NOCs?

 

Opportunity NOCs is not a vocational program. Opportunity NOCs teaches clients the Essential Skills they need for virtually any occupation.

 

 

 

 

Opportunity NOCs:

 

  • is based on HRSDC's Essential Skills Profiles

 

  • offers 12 and 20 week Essential Skills training sessions

 

  • can be adapted to meet the needs of Lower Level ESL/Literacy Learners

 

  • Better, Faster and more Cost Effective for some learners than upgrading

 

 

 

 

Upon completion of their program, clients will be able to:

 

  • read and comprehend at the complexity level required for the selected NOC

 

  • write comprehensively in the format expected within the selected NOC

 

  • perform the mathematical calculations required within their selected NOC

 

  • use the computer to perform NOC related tasks, i.e. software selection, email

 

  • develop an understanding of the vocabulary used within their selected NOC

 

  • complete documents they may encounter within their selected NOC

 

  • develop strategies for problem solving and working with others

 

  • participate in continuous learning activities

 

  • demonstrate the skills they need to do the job right!

 

 

 

Upon completion of their program, clients will be prepared for:

  •  
  • entry level or on-the-job training opportunities

 

  • formal vocational training programs

 

  • formal post secondary programs 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Please Note: The recommended hours of instruction can be time-lined at the discretion of the funding agency; options include 15, 20, or 30 hours per week.  Clients benefit from the tailored programs and low student-teacher ratio that Pathways offers. Our standard student-teacher ratio is 3:1. Unless otherwise stated, quotes are based on an average rate of progression and include the cost of tuition, books, materials, fees, taxes, etc
